"The first Oceans Conference, a high-level event of the United Nations, was held from 5 to 9 June 2017 . Its purpose was to mobilize global support for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14, on Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources.
Co-chaired by Fiji and Sweden, the Conference adopted a policy document entitled "Our Ocean, our future: call for action", the negotiations of which were conducted by the Permanent Representatives of Portugal and Singapore, as co-facilitators. This document will be adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on July 6th . During the Conference, 1372 voluntary commitments were submitted (11 of which by Portugal) with the aim of supporting the implementation of Goal 14, as well as seven partnership dialogues, aiming to promote collective action that would also contribute to that end .
Portugal was represented by Her Excellency the Minister of the Sea, Ms. Ana Paula Vitorino, whom, in addition to intervening in the Plenary Session, participated in the Partnership Dialogue dedicated to the promotion of scientific knowledge and the development of marine technology research and transfer capabilities."
