This morning’s attack to Syria’s chemical weapons facilities was conducted by three friends and allies of Portugal: United States, France and the United Kingdom. It was a targeted military operation aiming to inflict damage to the production and weapons distribution structures that are strictly prohibited by international law.
Portugal understands the reasons and the opportunity of this military intervention. The Syrian regime must assume its responsibilities in full. It is unacceptable the resort to means and ways of war that humanity can no longer tolerate.
Portugal reaffirms the need to avoid any escalation of the Syrian conflict that will bring about even more insecurity, instability and suffering to the region. As both the United Nations Secretary General and the European Union have repeatedly asserted, all parties should show openness to allow independent investigations to assess and held accountable those responsible for war crimes; and should show restraint in the use of force and commitment towards a negotiated and peaceful political solution to the Syrian conflict, which represents today a very serious threat to peace and security in the world.
